Shoppers flocked to Costco in Northeast D.C. to see actor Morris Chestnut on Sunday, Aug. 2, as he rolled out Sable, the joint bourbon business venture he has with some of his “Best Man” colleagues: filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee and cast mates Taye Diggs and Harold Perrineau.

A long line of mostly women wrapped around several aisles inside the huge warehouse store, to try the new bourbon and show their support for the longtime film and television star. For Chestnut, witnessing that kind of support from fans — without them even having tasted the spirit — was special.

“People coming out to support our product is one of the best compliments we get,” said Chestnut after looking at the long line in Costco. “When people try it, they will really love it.”

The four co-owners of Sable have been on the road for several months promoting their product. After having collaborated with his business partners for nearly 30 years, it was Perrineau who planted the seed for joining together on a bourbon.

“We love working with each other. In the movies, you know, our characters are always going through something,” said Chestnut, repeating Perrineau’s sentiment when coming up with the idea about paying homage to their “Best Man” characters. “We have a brown spirit when we’re playing cards, or when we’re  helping one of our characters through some emotional issues.”

There was consensus that, for these friends behind and in front of the camera, it made perfect sense to exemplify brotherhood and keep working together on Sable.

Many people waiting in line to meet Chestnut, who greeted each guest and took photos, were not only excited to meet a celebrity but also inspired the message behind Sable.

“When you pull up to a Sable event and end up getting your picture taken with celebrity crush Morris Chestnut, that’s a wow!” said one surprised shopper. “These kings just launched Sable Bourbon, ‘Bottled in Brotherhood.’ Their friendship is poured into every bottle. I’m not OK.”
